Betaal is an Indian fictional horror web series about a battle between modern-day cops and a centuries-old British Indian Army officer with his zombie redcoats. The series is written and directed by Patrick Graham and co-directed by Nikhil Mahajan. Who's to blame for the falling TRPs of Krishna, Doordarshan's number one serial? The ratings have dropped from 62 to 48 and programmers at the network believe that one of the reasons is that Betaal Pachisi, based on the Phantom stories with Shahbaz Khan in the lead (which is telecast on DD Metro at the same time), is drawing a lot of viewers, especially children, since it fills the fantasy. Shahbaz Khan (real name Haider Khan) is an Indian actor from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He is famous for playing lead roles in television serials such as Chandrakanta, The Great Maratha, The Sword of Tipu Sultan, Betaal Pachisi, Yug, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, Tenali Rama. With Arun Govil, Sajjan, Mulraj Rajda, Vijay Arora. Based on India mythological collection of 25 stories known as Baital Pachisi. It revolves around the Kind Vikram who is tasked to capture a Betaal, a celestial spirit analogus to Vampire. The Betaal during journey narrates a story & asks Question based on them. The serial is adapted from the original Sanskrit script of Betal Pachisi written by Somdev Bhatt. The first story is “Suryamal and his wife’s dilemma”.

Betaal Pachisi is an Indian television series based on the comic stripThe Phantom. The 49-episode Hindi series originally ran from 1997 to 1998 on DD National. It was directed by Sunil Agnihotri and starred Shahbaz Khan, Sonu Walia, Puneet Issar, Tom Alter and Vindu Dara Singh.[1][2][3]

Controversy[edit]

The show faced a lawsuit when King Features Syndicate filed a case arguing that Sunil Agnihotri had copied the idea of The Phantom comic strips for the Betaal series.[4][5] However, the court ruled that only the unique expression of an idea could be protected, not the idea itself.[6]
